Printing PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol) with a 3D printer requires a little more attention than printing PLA (polylactide), but with the right settings and procedures it is quite doable. Here are some best practices to print PETG successfully:
Print Bed Preparation: PETG adheres well to heated print beds. Make sure your print bed is clean and use adhesives such as hairspray or tape if necessary. A heated print bed temperature of around 60-80°C is recommended.
Nozzle temperature: The ideal nozzle temperature for PETG is usually between 230°C and 250°C. This can vary depending on the brand and composition of the PETG, so it is advisable to follow the manufacturer's recommendations and experiment with the temperature settings.
Printing Speed: Reduce printing speed compared to PLA. Start at a lower speed, about 50-60% of normal PLA speed, and gradually increase it to check the quality and adhesion.
Layer height: A layer height of about 0.2-0.3mm is suitable for PETG. Finer layer heights can cause difficulties as PETG tends to solidify slowly and overlaid layers cannot bond well.
Cooling: Reduce cooling compared to PLA. PETG requires less cooling to prevent warping and warping during printing. Some printers allow you to turn off cooling for the first layer bed and then gradually increase it for the layers above.
Nozzle to print bed gap: Make sure the nozzle to print bed gap is set correctly for the first layer. This distance should be slightly larger than PLA to avoid excessive adhesion.
Enclosure: Using a pressure vessel or cover can help stabilize the printing environment and minimize temperature fluctuations, which is particularly important for larger parts or those with thin walls to prevent warping.
